MURRAY DISTRICTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Located at the Old Schoolmaster's House, Edenvale Heritage Precinct, Pinjarra.
We regret the Schoolmaster’s House will not be open to the public during April – and until further notice. Please note that enquiries about local history will still be answered by our members. (see contacts below)
Do You Know That?
As we continue our discovery of Pinjarra’s heritage buildings:
As you approach Pinjarra from the north on South West Highway you will encounter another of Pinjarra’s heritage buildings on your left, before crossing the bridge. The Premier Hotel stands on the bank of the Murray at the corner of South West Highway and Williams Road.
The arrival of the railway to Pinjarra in 1893 gave the town a new lease of life and in 1894 the Premier Hotel was built opposite the new railway station, in competition with the Exchange Hotel on the south side of the bridge.
The Premier Hotel was constructed by the McLarty family who already had a hotel licence at the Pinjarra Arms, Blythewood. In 1894 Duncan McLarty transferred this licence to the Premier Hotel and was its first licensee. By the early 1900’s, travellers on the Perth-Bunbury railway could enjoy an overnight stay at the Premier.
The original building was built with two storeys with a single storey wing at the rear. The second storey was built with a large L shaped verandah.
